Hello, and welcome to Thrivewell Trauma Center! I'm Laurel Mayo, Associate Professional Clinical Counselor (APCC 15147). Whether you are dealing with the aftermath of trauma - old or new - or are struggling with life changes, family or relationship problems (including LGBTQ+), grief (including beloved animals), depression, addiction, existential issues, or other challenges, your willingness to consider actively working towards a happier and more satisfying life says something about you. I believe it says you are brave enough and strong enough to take charge of your life. I view taking the step to begin therapy as a reflection of the natural drive humans have to fulfill their potential. You deserve to have the life you want.

My goal as a therapist is to help you as a guide, supporter, ally, and collaborator to right the ship. Together, we will work toward helping you connect to your inner resources and resilience to make the changes you want to make. Healing and growth can involve pain, yes. They also open the door to joy, contentment, connection, and achievement (whatever that means to you). You decide on the destination, and we will get you there as a team.

I have worked with people who experienced trauma, abuse, self-doubt and self-loathing, addictions, family problems, and other hardships. My approach begins with a positive, healthy relationship between my clients and myself built upon the admiration I have for them, respect, unconditional caring, honesty, empathy, and compassion. In addition, with some clients I work with their inner system of "parts" (I'm IFS informed). A major goal of IFS-informed work is to guide clients in learning to provide the love, support, and understanding to themselves that they needed before but did not receive. I am person-centered in general, meaning that my clients decide what they wish to work on and achieve through therapy, and we work together towards that goal. I believe people have the capacity to heal and to grow throughout their lives, no matter the challenges they face. When helpful, I use CBT techniques, Motivational Interviewing, and interpersonal processes.

I look forward to getting to know you, and I will be honored to walk with you on your journey of healing and self-discovery
